Hello my Dear Friends! I’m happy to see you and hope you have as lovely day as we have here in Chania! Sunny day and warm, almost hot wind! I have today laundry and packing day – not the most easy job to decide what to wear next two weeks. And especially because this time of the year the weather can change very much in Finland. It can be warm late spring or cold early spring. I hope I carry lots of sunshine in my luggage for all their summer!
Here it is, my new and first ever sewing kit! My dear friend Avis had made one and she kindly made also tutorial for that. I liked the idea to make first patchwork block. Also quilting and binding it like a little quilt, made me want to do mine. Avis has a wonderful blog ‘Oh Sew Tempting’ and tutorial for this kit is HERE!
I made very brave decision to use my treasure selvages – fortunately I needed only small part of them! Now someone may think were you need any braveness to cut selvages?! But I’m so happy to have you quilter friends who, I know, get it! These special (for me) selvages are from ‘My Dream Quilt’!
For the pocket I added ric rac with the same ‘sea turquoise’. That keeps the edge also more steady. Then of course I needed more colour and thought this is the perfect place to try this technic with small patches. I have seen so beautiful quilts made like that! Sorry, but can’t remember how they call this – sewing raw edge patches over the fabric.
I didn’t have right felt for the ‘needle case’ so I had to improvise (as so often) and I made it with piece of fleece and fabric. Not the best but works.
And if you believed that I shall leave my quilting needle for two weeks, you were soooo wrong! hmmm … perhaps you guessed because other wise what’s the reason for the sewing kit?! I had a plan …
I made this quilt ready except the quilting …
Where is the sashing between the blocks, I quilted by machine just one line (= 4×4) to keep the blanket together for binding. Now I can continue to quiltq by hand and I think I quilt all the square blocks around with dark blue and green (what’s the colour between blue and green – perhaps petrol? you see the threads in earlier photo).
So even I haven’t managed to pack my cloths, I have taken care that I have a quilt to quilt with me and the lap top to see what you are doing! Now I need to continue packing …
Beautiful sewing kit, Teje, and OF COURSE you’ll need to take it with you🙂 Have a happy last minute packing, and please leave umppis home, it’s said to be +11C tomorrow (practically summer isn’t it?) around here and we’re on the Northern Exposure😉 area! Snow is disappearing SO fast we can but pallo-grilli in use on Vappu🙂
Thank you Mia for your lovely comment! ‘Umppis’ was my bad memory, couldn’t remember how you called it. Was it ‘unttari’? Okey, I have only thin one and spring coat! How exiting to celebrate Finnish Vappu – I guess I should find my white cap from our summer cottage. So have a wonderful Vappu (= 1. of May)! xxx Teje
That’s a beautiful sewing case Teje, remember to put it in your case not your hand luggage though. My Mum lost a lovely sewing case as she forgot it was in her handbag and at security they told her the needles and scissors were a security threat! You must be getting so excited about your trip, not long now. Billy sends a purr to Nero and so does Bear….he is a new puppy who my son and his girlfriend have taken on in their new home..photos on my blog ;0)
The Dream Quilt is really beautiful Teje; such beautiful colours. I love the little sewing case too. Ha ha! How could you leave your quilting behind? My knitting projects are always the first thing s to get sorted whenever we go away. Have a lovely holiday! Great to see Nero too! Ros
You sound like me — bringing along sewing projects while on vacation.
I love the sewing kit – are you allowed the scissors on the plane?
I make do with tiny folding scissors.
I still have a couple of months to decide on what project I am bringing. Somehow, knitting in July does not get my creative juices flowing.
ah dear teje, your there! i’m happy you’ve made it safely and are enjoying the sun too! did you bring the beautiful quilt to finish? and your new sewing kit? it is so pretty and practical too, i love it.
i hope you’ll be able to post some photos, i’m kind of anxious to see what finland looks like. tell your family hello from california!
Thank you so much Lori! I have my crafts with me and already some quilting books from the library! Today I’ll go for shopping with my friend – I don’t mind even it’s cloudy but that’s not the best for photos. Hoping to post some soon.
Best wishes! xxx Teje
