All the summer I was thinking and trying to decide how to make this quilt. I knew that I have lots of time to find out how I like it, because I knew I won’t start it before the autumn. I wanted to enjoy these fabrics and not to hurry during the busy summer time. Last week I was visiting one of my favourite quilters, Lee from Freshly Pieced – and there it was! When I saw her ‘Kissy Fish’ quilt, I knew at once that this is The One!
I wanted to use a simple pattern so that these fabrics stay visible enough. Also I wanted a project where I don’t need to plan and design so much – just to enjoy the lovely fabric, cutting, sewing, puzzling … watching how it grows!
Sometimes, quite often lately, strange things happen. When I wrote last time about the pillow and the balls, I almost said about Nero catching 7 balls. Then I thought it’s silly because I already said that he is now 7 years. But when I counted the balls and they were exactly 7, I had to write it! Later in the evening I started to make this quilt, which Lee has named ‘Kissy Fish’ because there are kissing fishes. That’s not so strange yet, but this is …
After making the first fishes I fixed them over the ‘sea’ and put few selvages to show you what fabric line this is. I can’t remember well the names and designers of the fabrics, lines and collections, because … I just can’t – I forgot even Nero’s birthday – do I need to say more. There are just so much beautiful fabrics. But you can believe that now I shall remember this fabric line! I was certainly staring mouth open for a while when I read … Sugar & Spice by The Quilted Fish!
So you understand that it was already chosen (by whom) that I will make ‘Kissy Fish’ quilt. It just took all the summer ‘to close the circle’ and me to see this Lee’s pattern. Also funny thing is that Lee has wrote a post and made a tutorial for this quilt exactly one year ago, last October. I don’t have any doubts if I have chosen the perfect pattern for my dream quilt.
I’m so happy to be able to share this story and making this quilt with you! Sorry about the lack of the light in the evening but still I like to show you the beginning …
This is the first quilt I shall make from someone else’s design. Usually I just can’t follow patterns because all the time I get ideas and like to plan more and even change my plans.
I make my blocks a little bit bigger than Lee because she made a baby quilt and I don’t want to cut these fabrics very small. These small blocks are a little bit less than 4″ so I use one already cutten square to help to stay in a right size. Big blocks are 6″ and they will make the squares with two triangles. I like to make them this way because here we avoid sewing so much triangles. I sew together all around one white and one colour 6″ square and then cut them like this …
I couldn’t help my self thinking if I need to make some white fishes like Lee has made. I thought perhaps I make only colour fishes, but when watching again carefully Lee’s quilt, I realized that her design is perfect. There needs to be also white fishes because then we get some beautiful colour-squares! Here is a link to Lee’s tutorial for her “Kissy Fish” quilt! Look also her other finished quilts and perhaps you find other favourites!
Today I managed to make new curtains to my sewing room and finish one of the jean pillows. As you can see, these last days I made a small brake from homeworks and I have been sewing, blogging and one day I was making experiments with a totally ‘new for me’ material. (That’s an other story and perhaps one day I can show you something.)
Even we wrote just yesterday with Nero, I wanted to tell you about this new quilt today, because tomorrow I want to share this with Lee! You remember that tomorrow is Wednesday and then we shall have a party at Lee’s “W.i.P Wednesday”! You find the button on my sidelist and I have add also button for ‘Fat Quarter Shop’ so it’s easy for you to visit any time you like to find fabrics for your Dream Quilt!
When I wrote the comment for a giveaway, we were asked what we would do with the fabric if we win. Just ‘out from some where’ it came to me to make ‘My Dream Quilt’. So I decided to name this quilt “Kissy Fish Dream”!
These fabrics make me very happy and it’s so relaxing to make these blocks! Thank you Lee for designing this beautiful pattern and sharing it with us!
From tomorrow the program has again laundry, cleaning, ironing … the usual … as you know. So see you after few days. I hope you have beautiful fabrics to enjoy and perhaps to make the quilt of your dreams!
Have a wonderful time! We send you hugs and kisses with Nero!!!
TEJE & NERO
PS. My blogging friends, these last days something strange happens also with my comments. I have wrote so many of them and when I send it the comment just disappeares. It doesn’t happen in all the blogs but many of them. Have you noticed this? I like to say that I visit you every day and enjoy so much reading and watching what you have been doing! Hopefully soon you find my comments again!
It’s been so long since I cut squares and triangles. It was very fun to see what you’ve done with these fabrics. You are always so cheery, and the fabric you choose speaks of light and joy! And what fun to think of kissy fish!
It’s always good to hear when a project makes someone happy. That’s the goal after all, right? This looks like a cute pattern.
I was wondering though, did you consider making a big triangle rather than piecing two triangles and a square, and if so what were your thoughts behind doing it this way? No criticism there, I just find it interesting to see how people decide to piece and why.
Thank you Nic! The main thing is to have fun and enjoy the project! I’m not sure if I understand well, but I prefer to make the big square and cut it for 4 pieces because then I don’t need to sew the long edge of the triangle (=diagonal) which is always more stretchy and difficult to keep in shape. I have learnt this from Benta (www.slikstitches.blogspot.com) and it’s also faster way to make for example pinwheels! X Teje
This is going to be a really lovely quilt, Teje. What a coincidence about the Kissy Fish quilt name and the name of the fabric line! The colours you have chosen are so light and fresh, this will look very beautiful. I loved the pillows on your previous post too, and would like to send Nero a big hug (if he will let me ) and a huge belated Happy Birthday wish! Enjoy your week.
Sometimes things go just in a direction you never would have guessed. I loved the idea of this Dream-Quilt of yours and I think you did the right thing by waiting until the right pattern came along. And this is indeed a wonderful pattern for these beautiful fabrics.
Teje, What stunning fabric! I can fully see why you are excited about it! I was going to ask you who the designer was – you knew people would ask – didn’t you 🙂
I can’t wait to see your finished quilt – I’m sure it will be gorgeous!
Have a great weekend.
