'SUMMER' - TUTORIAL HOW TO MAKE A WALL HANGING QUILT

Hello my sweet friends and readers! I hope you are fine and enjoying your summer – hopefully with sunshine and lovely weather! Today my post is full of  HOT SUMMER and SUNSHINE and lots of photos!

A while ago I wanted to make a sun with some triangles I had already cut and made squares.

As known, numbers are not my friends and I don’t like measuring, so I thought it goes better if I sew first the patches around the centre and then count the piece for the centre. Like this …

Now it is easy to cut the right size pieces for the center and the corners.

The SUNSTAR is ready and it’s time to continue with the borders. I used different orange and red colours to have the feeling of hot sun and summer!

When I was taking these photos, I had just got a lovely present! This amazing beautiful jewellery is from our dear friends from Athens who visited us here in Crete. Thank you again – this is my favourite!

Here you see that I have cut a circle for the center of the sun. But – before sewing and quilting this, we need to prepare the backing. Now it’s also good moment to make the label. I sew these three patches to the back fabric. I wrote with a pen the text and stitched the letters by hand.

Now we can put the quilt top and the backing together. With this quilt I didn’t use wadding because I didn’t want it too fat. I wanted this quilt to be a wall hanging but also possible to be used as a table cloth. So I have put only a small amount wadding to the center to make the round quilting more visible.

This is one of my favourite parts – stitching and quilting ! Now you can use all your imagination!

After the stitching, it’s time to make the binding. It is going to be the frame for the wall hanging quilt. For these strong colours I wanted strong binding, too and even I’m not fan of black, I felt that it was good colour for this.

I had some black/white Marimekko’s firm fabric and chose it for the binging. My dear aunt and friend has inspired and helpped me to start patchworks and quilting. From her I have learnt to begin the binding from the back side. So first I sew the binding to the back side (right side of the binding against the right side of the backing) and then I turn it to the front side. Like this you can have the stitching more easily good on the front side.

I try to collect selvages because I have seen so great patchworks made with them. My dear blog friend Riel makes amazing quilts using selvages! Marimekko’s fabrics has lovely names – this one is ‘Orchestra’.

When making the binding, it’s good to think how you want to hang your wall quilt. I have learnt two ways. The other one is to leave the binding open from two up corners for the wood, like this …

The other good way is to make triangles in the up corners. This is good for small wall hangings but if you make bigger it’s better to use other method. I saw this idea for the corners somewhere in the internet – but I’m so sorry, can’t find it now. Please excuse me not linking to the lady who showed this great way to hang a quilt!

I have made two almost similar quilts. The stitching is a little bit different. The other one has flyied to my sister to remind her about summer and hot sun during the English rainy winter and the other one flyied to dear friend to an other Mediterranean country to remind about the Greek summer.
